The Tale of Two Wolves

I want to talk about the perception of different situations in life and our predisposition to seeing the negative before the positive.

To illustrate this concept, I want to tell you an old Cherokee tale of the two wolves.

A young Cherokee comes to his wise grandfather to talk about the struggles he experiences within. He was thinking a lot about why he feels all sorts of emotions, the negative and the positive.

The grandfather listened and said, "There are two wolves constantly fighting within us: a dark one and a bright one." The grandson asked, "And which wolf will win?" The response was: "The one you feed."

Whether or not it's your first time hearing this story, it serves as an essential reminder of the power we have over our experiences and emotions.

Considering that we're evolutionarily predisposed to think about negative experiences more than positive ones, and we focus on the loss more than on what we could gain — we're mostly feeding the dark wolf.

In any given situation, regardless of how dire it looks, when we're about to think of the negative, it takes a conscious decision to reframe the mindset and try and see the potential positive side.
